Before you can apply for a license to drive a LGV (Large Goods Vehicle) or PCV (Passenger Carrying Vehicle) you will need to have a doctor complete a Medical Examination Report about you.
The medical examination will assess your ability to drive safely by examining your current physical and mental condition as well as looking at your past medical history. They will be interested in any of the following circumstances or conditions:
- Medication – any medication you are currently taking.
- Epilepsy – instances of epileptic attacks.
- Seizures – any kind of unexplained seizures or loss of consciousness.
- Diabetes –if you are a insulin treated diabetic then you may NOT be able to obtain certain types of HGV or PCV licenses.
- Eyesight – with or without wearing contact lenses or glasses you must be able to read a number plate at 20.5 meters.
- Angina – any uncontrolled heart conditions.
- Stroke – if you have suffered one within the last 12 months.
- Head injuries – if you have had any accident or surgery to the brain.
- Parkinson’s disease.
- Multiple sclerosis.
- Dementia.
- Obstructive Sleep Apnoea (OSA)
- Chronic neurological disorders
- Psychiatric or psychotic illness.
- Drug or alcohol addiction.
Other key points relating to medical examinations:
- You should let the doctor know of any medication that you are taking (bring it with you).
- You need to fill in a D4 medical form, this can be easily obtained online.
- You need to take photographic identification with you to any medical appointments and subsequent examinations. Also bring utility bill, driving license etc.
What will happen at the examination?
- Your weight and height will be measured and checked.
- You will have to complete some paperwork and answer questions.
- You will be asked to take a eyesight test, so make sure you bring your glasses if you wear any.
