Most historians agree that the English language started to take shape in Anglo Saxon Britain at roughly the 5th century. However it was only since the coming of the British Empire that it started to spread across the globe.

Indeed it is now estimated that at least a quarter of the world’s population can speak and understand basic English. Over three hundred and seventy five million people globally speak English as their first language, although in foreign countries many local dialects and regional varieties have developed. It is also used as a second language in many countries and is also used as a official language by many international organisations, like the United Nations. It is partly because of these reasons that it is known as a world language.
