Openreach, BT’s broadband arm and the country’s national broadband infrastructure provider aims to recruit and train 3,000 new field engineers this year to extend its fibre-to-the-premises (FTTP). In its ambitious plan to upgrade the UK to the next-generation of gigabit speed internet and to eliminate “not-spots” in remote areas, the company said it would hire thousands of engineers in 2018.
In response to growing political and public pressure to speed up Britain’s internet connectivity, BT is expected to spend 900 million pounds rolling out a faster UK broadband service. Through the first phase of the programme, dubbed Fibre First, it wants to connect up to 40 British towns and cities over the next decade.
The recruitment drive comes on the back of last year’s announcement that it was cutting 4,000 roles worldwide. With more than half of these losses being borne by its UK operations, the expected hiring spree will be especially welcomed in places such as Birmingham, Bristol, Cardiff, Edinburgh, Leeds, Liverpool, London and Manchester, all cities which will make up the first phase of the roll-outs.
The groups campaign will ensure that Britain remains a leading digital economy in the G20. There are 30 million premises in the UK, of these three million will have fibre-led internet by 2020, up from two million.
Applicants
Those wishing to apply for the positions should have a good level of Maths and English skills, as well as a full driving licence and a head for heights. Successful applicants will undertake a tailored 12 month accredited learning programme that will include periods of on-the-job experience and eventually lead to an externally recognised qualification. It should also be noted that as the company plans to minimise disruption caused by working at weekends and at night whenever possible, applicants must be prepared to work outside of normal hours.
