Academic qualifications that are displayed appropriately can add gravity and value to a CV.

What order to list your qualifications in
Start by listing your most recent qualifications first and working backwards. Focus on displaying those modules, degrees and certificates that are most relevant to the job or your career.

What info to list

  • The school, college or university you attended.
  • The examinations or qualifications you passed.
  • The dates you attended.
  • The subjects you studied.

Do not

  • Mention those exams or courses that you failed, just display those that you passed.
  • Give the full address or contact details of schools, colleges or universities (if required you can supply these at a later date).

If you do not have a strong academic background
If you left school with poor grades or dropped out of university and your academic track record is not great, then you have no real option but to skim over this section. Compensate for your lack of academic qualifications by focusing more on your work experience, skills or future potential as a dedicated hard working employee.

If you dropped out of a course
If you left college or university midway through a course then it may be worthwhile mentioning this, however be prepared to give a valid and believable reason for your dropping out.

Currently studying or in the middle of a course
If you are half way through a full time or part time course, for instance a long distance learning or Open University programme then it is worth listing this. In the date section simply put ‘Current’.

Update your resume regularly
Keep it fresh and current by updating it with the latest training programs and other academic qualifications that you have gained.

Inflating or falsifying educational qualifications
Avoid doing this at all costs. It is one of the most common falsehoods in CV or job application to inflate or falsify academic qualifications.

How employers can catch out candidates who have inflated their CVs
These days most employers will screen and carry out detailed checks on a potential employees. With the help of the Internet, specialist companies and other investigative tools they can easily find out if you have omitted, exaggerated or left out certain facts.

Any discrepancies discovered will be flagged up and investigated further. Your applications will then either be immediately binned or you will be asked to explain the discrepancy.

Saving your work
Remember to click the ‘Save and Continue’ button at the bottom of the page before you leave this page. Otherwise you may lose what you have just typed.
