FIRST AID TUTORIALS – what to do and also what NOT to do in the following emergency situations

Treating a bleeding cut
Step 1
Minor cuts will typically stop bleeding on their own. However if this is not the case then your initial priority should be to stop the bleeding. Do this by;

  • Using a clean cloth apply gentle pressure to the cut. Depending on the wound, it can take anywhere up to 15 minutes of continuous pressure for this to be effective.

If the bleeding is severe, spurting or is not stopping them call the emergency services immediately.

Step 2
If you have been successful in stopping the bleeding then your next objective should be to clean the cut. Do this by flushing and cleaning it with clean water. If there is any dirt in the would then try to remove it with a sterile utensil. When cleaning it be very careful not to push any dirt further into a open cut, as this can cause a infection. Avoid using soap directly on the cut as that may irritate it.

Step 3
Once you have cleaned up the wound the next stage is to apply a antibiotic cream to it and cover it with a clean medical bandage. Make sure to change the bandage every with a fresh one until the wound has visibly healed. At all times look for signs swelling, redness of puss as these are normally indications of infection. If this is the case then you need to seek immediate medical attention.
