Civil engineering personal statement example 1

“As a highly capable individual with a strong academic background, I am proud to say that I already possess a comprehensive understanding of the technical elements of civil engineering.

From an early age I have always been a hands on person with a knack for fitting things together and helping to solve practical problems. As I became a teenager I started to become more interested in how buildings were constructed and stood up. At school and college this curiosity led me to choosing subjects that included elements of construction and engineering. On projects I gained great satisfaction from utilising mathematics, natural sciences, and common sense to design and build things that actually worked. This passion for engineering has led to an ambition to gain a degree qualification which I can then use as a stepping stone to becoming a civil engineer.

Since the start of the year I have undertaken a part time job with a local engineering company. This work experience and what I have learnt from it about material science, design projects, building environment and geotechnics has only encouraged me in my desire to become a qualified engineer. My position as an assistant to a professional engineer has enabled me to develop not only specific engineering industry competencies, but also a valuable set of transferable skill sets which will help me to excel in any job.

When it came to choosing which university to apply for, I had a few criteria in mind such as large campus, exciting social scene and a top ranking civil engineering school. You university ticked all of these boxes. Other points that attracted me to your institution was the diversity of your degree programme, the fact that your Civil Engineering School is one of the most admired in the country and the knowledge that you allow students to specialise in subjects which they enjoy.

I believe that I have the enthusiasm and real interest in civil engineering that will make me a suitable candidate for this degree course.”

Civil engineering personal statement example 2

“Our society would not be able to function as it does without the work of civil engineers. The infrastructure that they help to build and maintain can benefit communities and individuals for generations. For me this simple statement sums up what it is to be a civil engineer, a professional who has the opportunity to work on projects that not only change our physical surroundings but also at the same time improve the lives of literally millions of people.

Engineers more than anyone else have the opportunity to shape and manipulate the world we live in. I aspire to become one of these people and work on large scale technically demanding projects that build the ‘life support systems’ of modern communities. As I have always been interested in environmental sustainability issues I would ideally like to be able to use my experience and professionalism as a qualified engineer to safely deliver carbon neutral, sustainable, high quality construction projects on time and within budget.

Ever since I was a teenager I have always been fascinated with buildings and putting things together, although this is not the only reason for my wanting to become a engineer. Unlike other professions as a civil engineer I will get the opportunity to be intimately involved in construction projects. Added to this is the intense feeling of satisfaction I will get from firstly being able to physically see the fruits of my labour and secondly from leaving behind a legacy that really benefits society.

In addition to studying at college I recently finished a summer job as a administrative assistant to a Civil Engineer who specialised in the analysis, design and assessment of high-density developments across both rural and industrialized regions. He was involved in working with a number of companies and assisting them with taking their R&D projects through from initial concept to commercialisation. I as his assistant got first hand experience of being involved in the planning, development and construction of bridges, shopping centres, airports, roads, ports and tunnels.

This experience more than anything made me realise that even after graduating with a degree there will always be new things to learn; new techniques; new materials, and new problems to apply them to.

Such is my interest in this field and desire to learn more that at college I would read above and beyond the course material I was given. I wanted to gain a comprehensive view and understanding of the subject matter, so that I would have as much information as possible to make an informed decision about this field as a possible future career. All the extra studying and hard work has paid off and I am proud to state that I now have a sound understanding of the theoretical principles which underlie Civil Engineering, particularly in relation to densely populated and economically disparate urban settings.

To achieve my ambition I am presently seeking a place on a degree course in Civil Engineering with a reputable university where I will be able to learn more and gain the required academic qualifications to get closer to my goal. I would like to enrol on a course that encourages students to use a combination of technical knowledge and creative flair to come up with solutions to building problems. I want lecturers to constantly be pushing me, stretching my interests and testing my abilities as I believe it is only this way that I can reach my real potential.

I posses a strong desire to change our surroundings and improve the everyday lives of people. I am also passionate about being involved in projects through each stage from feasibility to design and implementation. I sincerely hope that these last two sentences demonstrate to your my passion for engineering. All things considered I firmly believe that my experiences, dedication and qualifications to date will show my commitment for studying this subject, thereby making me an ideal candidate for a place on your course.”
