How to write a Field Sales Representative cover letter

A cover letter is an introduction to your CV and you as a candidate. Recruiters want to see that you can drive sales and build relationships with potential and existing customers within an assigned territory.

Through it tell the recruiter where you saw the vacancy, who you are and what you can do. Give them examples of using creative thinking and bringing new ideas to drive increased results.

When writing it stick to a simple clear format that starts with a short introduction followed by a middle bit explaining your strengths and finishes off with a call to action, namely requesting interview invite. Apart from mentioning your hard ‘technical skills’, also tell them you are personable, commercially driven, self-motivated and professional in your approach.

Use your cover letter to show you are an ambitious sales professional with a genuine fire in their belly. Someone who loves the thrill of the chase, knocking on doors, and taking a deal from a cold lead to a signed contract.

Skills to include in your CV:

  • Objection handling: Recognising objections and steering the conversation in a different direction to overcome them.
  • Planning Daily Routes: Organising customer visits and sales activities efficiently to maximise, time, productivity and territory coverage.
  • Analysing Territory Performance: Reviewing sales figures, customer growth, sales volume, and target achievement to identify areas for improvement.

In your cover letter show you can:

  • Seek out every opportunity even when unlikely, always exploring what next and opening every door.
  • Exceed sales targets and generate revenue growth by maximising opportunities from existing customers and winning new business.
  • Build trust without relying on a pre-arranged appointment.
