These are sent in with your CV or job applications. Each covering letter should be customised and written for the employer you are applying to. Doing this can go along way to helping you secure an interview with a prospective employer.

If possible always address the cover letter to the hiring manager or person who has advertised the vacancy.

Writing a job application cover letter:

  • Keep the letter short, to one page only.
  • Have a maximum of 4 or 5 paragraphs in there.
  • Do not repeat specific points that you have already mentioned in your CV.
  • Read the job advert, interpret it and list key skills the employer is looking for. Then create your letter so it mentions your ability to match these job requirements.
  • Research the employers company and try to show your knowledge of their products or services in your letter.
