How write an IT CV

CV structure
The format of your CV plays a key role in how you’re perceived by employers as it is the first thing they will notice about your CV.
A clear, simple and well-structured layout will not only make it easier for the reader to spot your strongest points, it will also demonstrate your professionalism, presentation skills and attention to detail.
In the United Kingdom, virtually all CVs are usually two pages long and follows a reverse chronological format, which places the candidates most recent experience first.
Key sections of the CV include your name and contact details, a personal profile or statement, education, work and volunteer experience, and relevant skills. Optional sections, like interests can also be added but are not required, to give employers a fuller picture of who you are.

Contact details
The header of your CV may seem like a small detail and size, but it carries a disproportional amount of weight. In clear crisp and bold text you should clearly display your name, phone number, address, and email. Your aim is to make it easy for recruiters to contact you.
Accuracy is key here. As the recruiter will use what you’ve written to contact you, anything you write has to be error free.
Achieve accuracy by double-checking everything for 100 per cent correctly spelt email addresses and phone number. Remember that something as small as a typo can lead to a missed phone call and lost valuable opportunity.

- Email address
- Your current job title (if it’s relevant)
IT CV personal summary
Every functional or chronological CV should start with a strong personal statement that quickly highlights your expertise and ability to handle IT issues that require knowledge of the latest industry trends. This career profile as it is also known should be placed in the upper half of your CV, just below your contact details and above your work experience.
As a brief paragraph of no more than 150 words, it should be concise, engaging, and tailored to the specific role you’re applying for. Put your strongest pints in here so that it immediately captures the recruiter’s attention and encourages them to read the rest of your CV.
IT work experience
This section is where you write about your career journey, work experience, promotions and achievements in a IT environment. Instead of just listing your past employers, go into more detail about each role by make a detailed list of your duties. Focus more on current and recent roles rather than things you’ve done 10 or more years ago.
For every position, include your job title, employer’s name, employment dates, and a clear breakdown of your key responsibilities and accomplishments. Under each job use bullet points to make this information easy to scan and give extra weight to your most recent and relevant roles.
Older or less relevant positions can be kept brief, as employers will not be interested in them. This approach allows recruiters to quickly see the value you’ve added in previous roles and the impact you could bring to their organization.
Show your ability to:
- Diagnose and resolve IT-related issues effectively and efficiently.
- Ensure software licensing is up to date & maintain the IT asset register.
- Maintain and repair computer systems and networks.
- Provide technical support to users.
- Maintain and update technical documentation to reflect system configurations and changes.
- Solve IT problems in computer systems, network infrastructure and cloud platforms.
- Help to solve technical problems.
- Ensure security and privacy of networks and computer systems.
Skills section
Beef up your CV with a skills section that accurately reflects the abilities and expertise you’ve gained through work experience, education, and training. To really strengthen your CV, aim for a mixture of both hard and soft skills that not only show that you’re qualified but also adaptable and well-rounded for any role.
The best way to do this is by firstly reviewing the job description carefully and noting which skills are mentioned most often, as these are the ones the employer values most. Then if you have those skills, make sure to feature them in your skills section so recruiters can quickly see that you’ve got what they want. This tried and tested formula is a the only way to ensure this section remains fully targeted. Also, give examples of how you’ve used these skills and quantify them through percentages and statistics.
